what i think is more interesting is mayers is FA after this season - will he stay? he could be a guy that remains with the same team his whole career. i'd certainly be ok with that.

I, on the other hand, would love to see Mayers outta here, and soon. Yeah, he scored a shorty v. Anaheim. He's like a dime a dozen player, I'd rather give somebody like Mike Glumac his roster spot.
I don't think players like Mayers are a dime a dozen. He is a fantastic penalty killer, has the best speed on the team next to D-vo and doesn't dick around with the puck- he puts it on (and sometimes in) net. Not to mention he has been loyal to the franchise, doesn't ask for huge raises, is respected and does a lot for the STL community. There should always be at least one spot on this team for a player like him.
:plusplus: Even though he doesn't score 20 goals every season, he is still a key part of the team... well stated BoxCar
Mayers can be the nicest guy in the city and on the team. And he can give 110% every night. But are we grading players on effort or results? A person can work as hard as they can 24/7 but a person like Mayers, no matter how hard he works, is not going to be another Gretzky or Crosby.

Now, as a penalty killer, he's got great speed and all that, but so do a lot of other penalty killers.

As a person, I'm sure he is a really nice guy.

As a player, I see him as a dime-a-dozen guy. If there's a roster spot for him, great, if not, I don't see it as losing a key player.
Mayers does an excellent job at what he is supposed to do.
He's a good PK guy, works extremely hard, will hit anyone, will fight anyone, (and usually does very well), has very good wheels and he's fairly cheap.

When you start asking him to score goals, that is when you will be disappointed in him.

I think Mayers is much more valuable than your dime-a-dozen checker. When he is asked to just go out there and be a checker, he's pretty good.
It's just annoying when he gets the puck around the net and can't ever seem to make anything happen on a consistent basis...but then again, if he were a checker with hands and the ability to score 20 goals, he'd be making a LOT more money.

Meanwhile, back to the topic ...

The Blues will play 28 of their final 34 games against West opponents. That includes two games against Vancouver, currently in the seventh spot, and four games against Minnesota.

I am in absolute shock over the west coast trip they just completed. 7-8 possible points? Wow.

I still really, really, really, REALLY hope they are sellers at the deadline.

"Sellers" as in, trade all the UFAs? Or "Sellers" as in, trade a couple of the UFAs?

Sellers as in trade anyone that will not be with the team when they are ready to compete for the Cup. IE: Guerin, Tkachuk, Drake, Weight (won't happen) and Rucinsky (won't happen)

Well, since nobody knows when this team will be ready to compete for the cup...it would be tough to decide who to trade.
It could be next year...it could be in six years.
Which is why I think they should trade a couple that they have no intention of resigning, and sign the rest.

I think Rucinsky could easily go. I'm hoping Drake goes. I'm on the fence about Tkachuk. I'd like to see Guerin stay. I'm on the fence about Brewer. I'd like to see Weight stay.

If we'd have had Murray On Opening night, we'd be competing now.....

I think that which hasn't already been mentioned because it's perhaps too obvious is the amount of political capital Andy Murray has built up since turning this team around.

He probably has more say in who he finds usefull than any in this forum give him credit for, much more so if the team's overall performance keeps this sick pace up till the trade deadline.

If this team somehow manages to get to the playoffs, and is mostly healthy, I think they can compete for the Cup. They have to be playing amazing hockey just to get to the playoffs. Unless they run out of steam, they could pull off something amazing. Stranger things have happened.

If the Blues do get into the playoffs, they will have played excellent hockey over the last 50 games of the season.

A team that has been hot for that long going into the playoffs would be extremely dangerous.

We'll see. Staying that hot will be tough.

Yes, because you both know for sure that they would have played at this pace for 60 games.

Rucinsky could easily go? He is overpaid and has a no trade clause. How does that make him easy to go?

Weight is overpaid also and has another year on his contract. You'll get your wish there

Guerin stay? Why? As of right now he is our most valuable trade piece.

Forget the no trade clause. It's just there so he has a say in where he goes. Do you think he loves St. Louis so much that he didn't want to be traded? I doubt it.

Leads the team in assists.
One of the best teammates you could hope to have.
It would be nice if he had a few more goals...but I don't think he's overpaid.

Because you need good players to win, I've already said I don't think we should dump everyone. I think that would be a huge mistake. If we get blown away in an offer for Guerin, fine...but not just to get anything.

Pronger was our most valuable trade chip coming off of the lockout as well...I'd still rather have him now.

And I think Brewer has quite a bit of trade value right now...more than Guerin, imo.

They may not have won at their current pace under Murray...but would they have at least five or six more wins? I think so.
