Better question. How do you train them to do it? HA!
I have a 10 1/2 yr old Lab that has done it for about 10 years. I asked vet same thing. He didn't know and said it was harmless. He said they tend to do it as filler when their diet is too rich. or something. I yell at her if I see her do it, but I'm sure she's back at it as soon as my back is turned.

Not really much you can do. Some...most...dogs just like it more than others. Usually they'll grow out of it.

Your guess is as good as mine.

Better housetraining? Crate training? Diapers?

Seriously, I hate dealing with that behavior shit (pun? anyone?). Behavior, vaccines, dermatology....blech! Give me something sick and dying and I'm on cloud nine.

A lot of dogs react badly to being left alone, especially when they are young. This sounds like this might be the case here.
If it's only 6 hours a day - my advice would be to crate her while you are gone, at least until she grows out of that stage.

Have you considered a complete dogectemy?

It's a radical procedure whereby the veterinarian replaces the entire dog, from nose to tail, with another dog.

Not as popular as the catectemy, as you can sometimes tell the difference with dogs.

I think some dogs, as nauseating as it is, just like the taste of poo. My parents have a rescued Shih Tzu (har) who can't enough of the buffet found in the cats' litter box. And since they have chickens, too, the barnyard is basically one giant smorgasbord to him. They've tried forever to get him to stop, but he won't. Speculation is that he has some kind of emotional "thing" from being a rescue (his previous owner died, so Max bounced around between a couple of different homes before my mom & dad agreed to take him); personally, I just think he likes shit.

According to my wife (who is dog-addicted), your dog has a condition called "corporphyria".

I do love, however, the difference in tenor of responses between *this* board and the (dog-addicted) ones that she frequents. :)
