I thought you fat fingered "gingering". My mind is pretty dirty, but I wouldn't have thought of that on my own.

Re: new random observation thread
Just out of curiosity, what is the right amount to tip??? I usually do close to 20% of the total bill(tax included), but I've had friends of mine say 25% is more customary now, and others say it should only be 15-20% of the pre-tax amount on the bill..._Gassoff wrote:Sometimes, and other times I'm bar tending. Re: new random observation thread
Depends on the service IMO.. 15% is still standard.. And unless they're terrible I always give at least that.. If they're pretty phenomenal i'll do 25-30.

I typically leave right around 20%. It seems that 20 is the "new 15" at least for most younger people. Most old folks I know stick strictly to 15% though.Blues Fan in SF wrote:

I leave all my tips in the form of Sacagawea dollar coins.

Tip according to service. The worst thing ever is the "verbal tip," where they tell you what a great job you did, and then leave you 10%.Blues Fan in SF wrote:Just out of curiosity, what is the right amount to tip??? I generally don't have an issue with a 15% tip. If I screwed up on the table, I understand a lower tip.
Take a moment to think about how demanding you are, how many special things you ask for, etc. If you order food prepared a special way (no onions, extra mushrooms, sauce on the side, please) realize that you are causing extra work for the server. As a server, I don't mind at all, I want you to get it the way you like it. Perhaps you are thirsty and need four Dr. Pepper refills, consider that as well.
Personally, I tend to tip in the 20 - 25% range when the service is good, 15% when it is fair, and less when it is poor. For breakfast, when the entire bill is like $5, I tend to tip 50%.
My original comment was about a rash of 10% I have been receiving lately, from people who got very good service. It's very clear that the economy isn't as good as it has been, but the cost of your entrees didn't go down, so why should the tip?

We get a lot of high school kids and college students, and, quite frankly, they are (typically) the worst tippers of all. Are these the younger people you are referring to?strocklen083 wrote:

_Gassoff, I love you dude, but come on "If you order food prepared a special way (no onions, extra mushrooms, sauce on the side, please) realize that you are causing extra work for the server. Seriously, WTF extra work does that cause for the server? You have to write a few extra words on the order sheet. And how much extra work can it even be for the cook, don't put oninons on? You make it sound like it's a major issue or something_Gassoff wrote:Tip according to service. That should be most of the time. (Frank). It's not as bad as the IRS thinks, but it's still pretty bad...ksbluesfan wrote:It was 75 and sunny here today. On top of that, I got my Missouri tax refund today too!Blueline29 wrote:Could today have been a more gorgeous day?

I've already gotten and spent both refunds. I did, however, get some much-anticipated concert tickets via UPS today, so today's been a delight all the way around.ksbluesfan wrote:It was 75 and sunny here today.
