The only band I can think of from Iowa that would fit into your list is Slipknot.

Here's a few to nominate:

Virginia...Carbon Leaf
Oregon...The Shins (recently adopted us)
Washington...Soundgarden

To disagree, one doesn't have to be disagreeable.

Dude, Chicago!

Are they actually from Chicago though? I have no idea...
TON of bands from Chicago.

And I can't think of any... Soil is the only one that immediately jumps out at me and they're decent but not as good as other bands that have come out of Chicago.

Missouri is a tough one. Several good lesser-known bands, but no clear stand-out. I nominate The Bottle Rockets. Or The In?

I wish nobody in Missouri liked them.. People won't stop talking about the show at Busch..

I updated the first post with some of the bands that I thought were pretty solid choices. Some of these states are going to be tough to decide, like California. Please provide arguments for why you think a band is the best one in these tightly contested states, like CA.

I still like the Beach Boys for Cali. Huge body of work, so many hits, influential later work like Pet Sounds, and they are just a signature California band.

I'll throw in another contender for Florida - Lynyrd Skynyrd

Vermont: Witch

It's J Mascis' stoner/doom metal band.

Anything is better than Phish.
