Why not? They already pissed tradition away by sacking the classic divisions and conferences for geographic ones. Why should the Blues be penalized for playing in a stronger conference? There are 4 teams in the west that would have had a higher finish (assuming the tie breaker went to Dallas with 88 points) than either the Flyers (7) or the Canadiens (8). With one big giant playoff, the Blues would have been seeded 15 and the Flames would have been seeded 16. Both teams missed the playoffs in favor of lesser Eastern conference teams.Prngr44 wrote:glen a richter wrote:Perhaps it should be top 16 teams league-wide make the playoffs.![]()
How the hell would that work?
No conference finals, just one big giant playoff?
Because 1 would always beat 16. We don't want this to be like the NBA.Prngr44 wrote:If you're going to do that, why wouldn't you have #1 play #16, etc?
How do you know the Blues play in a stronger conference? It seems that Western teams are buffed, since we have Edmonton, and the East has Washington. 2-4 points sounds like it could be a reasonable handicap to me for the Eastern teams.glen a richter wrote: Why should the Blues be penalized for playing in a stronger conference?
Kind of flawed... you're saying the 9th best team gets to play the worst team? What would the point of finishing high in the standings get you? 9th place gets home ice advantage but 5th place doesn't?glen a richter wrote:Because 1 would always beat 16. Travel is a HUGE factor in the Western conference. Means more wear and tear on the Western teams. Eastern teams rarely leave their own time zone. BIG difference...OPTIMEGUS wrote:How do you know the Blues play in a stronger conference? Now, this is really going to blow your mind.
Over the last 16 years, 8 teams from the West have won the Cup, and 8 teams from the East have won.
Over the last 17 years (including this 09-10 season), 2 Western teams have finished last. Guess which two.
