Was reading the Blues - Hawks portion of the NHL rivalries section of Wikipedia (linked in our 'Resources' section above) and I came across this...

To this day Belfour refuses to appear in regular-season games in St. Louis: the only exception coming in 1999 when he replaced Roman Turek for the Dallas Stars in the third period of a 4–4 game, and only after Turek had allowed four unanswered goals. When he was spotted skating onto the ice, the Savvis Center crowd greeted him with the "Bellll-foooour" chant, first popularized in the '93 series.

That can't be right...can it? I don't remember him boycotting St. Louis after that series.

I don't recall hearing about that, but I was a kid in the 90's. Wasn't Belfour signed by STL last year as a minor-leauge goalie consultant?

I don't think that's right. I think I saw him play here when he was a Leaf in like 2005. I could be wrong though.

I've never seen that in writing, but I had heard that before.
"refuses" might be a very strong word, but he sure as hell didn't like playing in STL...

I was at those games vs Chicago--the chanting was loud, persistent, and clearly (and visibly) drove Belfour nuts. the sound fx guy got into it as well, chiming in with a tolling church bell sound in between the chants (think Metallica for whom the bell tolls). It was (Franking) beautiful.


Not that teh wikipedia is the most reliable source but this one has a ring of truth to it.

Yeah, the Blues hired him as a goaltending consultant a few years ago. This is a bunch of bunk.

Yeah, as the board's resident Belfour fan (probably the only one)...I can tell you that it's definitely NOT true. I used to see him play in STL all the time when I lived in the area and he was with the Hawks and Stars. Not to mention, could you imagine a player, even one of the best in the league, going to his coach prior to the game and asking to sit because of a stupid 'boycott'?!

As for the chant, it's always fun to hear hometown fans getting on opposing players, but I doubt that makes anyone 'afraid' to play there. Those guys learn at a young age to tune that stuff out.

01-02 season - two starts at STL - 6 GA total. Loss and a tie.

However, he does have a history of losing to STL. Too bad hockeydb doesn't go back before 2000. Those would be interesting gamelogs when Belfour played vs STL.

03-04 - STL won on road against him in OT.

And it's still not true. That series with the Hawks in 93 was only his 2nd year in the league. He played 4 more seasons in Chicago, and played around 70 games per season each (most) of those years. I know he played a lot in STL after that series because I've seen it with my own eyes.
