Cards call up Cleto

Postby cardsfan04 » Thu Jun 02, 2011 8:13 pm

We got him from Seattle in the Brendan Ryan trade. He started in high-A, but was promoted to AA earlier this year where he has made 9 starts. He's a flame thrower that hasn't been able to get past A until this year. Apparently he has started to turn the corner and might be a future late inning guy. I am shocked beyond articulation that he is the callup though. I mean, I don't hate it, but I would have laughed at anybody who suggested this yesterday. I'm curious how this plays out.

We've got a lot of heat-throwers in the bullpen. Cleto had a rough outing tonight but it's his first appearance. Will be interesting to see what this guy can do in the future.

From what I understand, not only did they want to take a look at him, but they didn't want to further upset the situation in Memphis.

I think it's a nice change from the norm for this staff, but also probably a few days late (adding another arm to the pen).

Terrible stat line, but I saw a lot of positives. He sure brings the heat. If he can get his control down and work up his slider, he could be deadly. Reminds me of Motte a few years ago, but with more heat.

The thing that most impressed me, though, was how he responded to giving up back-to-back HRs. It's his MLB debut, it started about as terribly as possible topped off by b2b HRs, and he responds by retiring 5 in a row. I mean, you can't call it a good outing, but there's something to build on for sure. Not surprisingly, though, he is not big league ready.
