GDT#48: 1/23/12 > Blues @ Red Wings > 6:30 PM > NBCSN/KMOX

Post by dmiles2186 »

The Detroit Red Wings have made good use of extra time in their most recent games, including a few that have kept their team-record home win streak going.

The league-leading Red Wings might have another considerable challenge to that 16-game run Monday night against the red-hot St. Louis Blues, who will try to take over the NHL’s top spot with their first victory in three tries at Joe Louis Arena over the past month.

Detroit’s home win streak is tied for the fourth-longest in NHL history and is four shy of matching the record held by the 1929-30 Boston Bruins and 1975-76 Philadelphia Flyers. The Red Wings, who have a league-best 65 points, have claimed six consecutive victories overall - one shy of matching their longest run this season Nov. 19-Dec. 2.
AdChoices

Detroit has gone beyond regulation to get five of those wins - four via shootouts and one in overtime. Valtteri Filppula scored in the fourth round of a shootout Saturday to help secure a 3-2 win over Columbus.

“We think we’re going to win, which is a real nice thing to have,” coach Mike Babcock said. “But we can play better than we have, no question about it. So we don’t want to get into a rut playing like this, we want to play way better.”

The Red Wings (32-15-1) might need to play better to beat the Blues (29-12-6), who are 8-0-1 in 2012 and trail Detroit by one point while sitting level with Chicago and the New York Rangers. Jaroslav Halak had his career-best scoreless streak end at 164 minutes, 38 seconds Saturday, but St. Louis matched a season high with a fourth straight win, 4-2 over visiting Buffalo.

“We can’t win every game 1-0,” said captain David Backes, who had two goals and two assists. “When (our goalies) only let in one or two goals, we have to make sure we have the offensive firepower to reward them.”

The Blues have played just once on the road in their last nine games, a 3-0 win at Montreal on Jan. 10. They’ve split their four meetings with Detroit this season but lost twice at Joe Louis Arena last month.

Jimmy Howard made 31 saves in a 3-0 win Dec. 31 after Niklas Kronwall completed his team’s rally from a two-goal deficit in a 3-2 victory four days earlier.

“There’s no better place to test us than going to Detroit,” St. Louis forward B.J. Crombeen said. “It’s our last opportunity this year, and we want to make sure we do it right.”

Halak hasn’t faced Detroit this season, and it’s unclear if he’ll be in net for this game. He’s often struggled versus the Red Wings and St. Louis faces Pittsburgh on Tuesday night in its final game before the All-Star break.

“I think we’re playing better than the last time we were in Detroit,” coach Ken Hitchcock said. “I’m looking forward to seeing how we do in the next two games.”

Halak is 2-3-1 with a 4.35 GAA - his worst against any opponent - in six all-time matchups. However, he’s on a personal-best seven-game win streak and has three shutouts over his last five.

The Blues’ lone All-Star, Brian Elliott, has given up three goals in three of his last four games - two of those in Detroit. He’s 2-3-0 with a 2.41 GAA in five all-time starts against the Red Wings.

Like Elliott, Howard has started all four games in the season series. He’s won five straight against the Blues at home while allowing a combined nine goals.

St. Louis defenseman Alex Pietrangelo is riding a career-best nine-game point streak but has just one assist in nine contests against Detroit.

Goofy scheduling. Blues play ~80% of their home games from November to mid-February. During that same stretch, they face Detroit in Detroit 3 times in less than 30 days. That is ridiculous scheduling. Good part - the last matchup with Detroit is in St Louis in April. Time to end the Wings home win streak and make Howard look like the putz he is after that ass-hat Melrose named him the goalie of the week in spite of the Halak pitching back-to-back shutouts.

Thought I would share this... On NHL TVs' Plays of the Week, Barry Melrose named only Detroit Red Wings as his 3 players of the week (defense, forward and goalie) because of their 4 wins last week. I think Barry made a mistake since 3 of those 4 wins required OT shootouts while the Blues only needed regulation and ROWs count more, Halak and Pietrangelo hade better stats than Howard and Lidstrom, respectively, last week, while Backes scored goals compared to Datsyuk only dishing out assists.

For your consideration:

Lidstrom this entire month - 2 G 1 A +6 (This week 4 GP: 2 G +3)
Pietrangelo last week - 3 GP: 1 G 3 A +5 (this month is ridiculous - 3 G 10 A +7, but keep on raving about Lidstrom, Barry)
One could reasonably argue 4 points and +5 in 3 games while helping a team earn 2 shutouts is better than 2 points and a +3 in 4 games, 3 of which required OT.

Datsyuk 4 GP: 5 A +4
Backes 3 GP: 2 G 3 A +6
Again: 5 points in 3 games with a +6 compared to 5 points in 4 games. I'd bet Backes has more hits, too.

Howard 3 GP 1.27 GAA .949 Save Pct 1 shutout, 3 wins
Halak 3 GP 0.67 GAA .964 Save Pct 2 shutouts, 3 wins.
Ummm... Howard is the goalie of the week???? Riiiiggghhhht. Barry's reason was Howard has the most wins in the NHL, which is an overall stat, not a weekly stat.

IMO, Melrose overlooked the Blues simply due to the Wings playing one more game.

Stick it to 'em, Blues!!!!

Excellent work breaking that down and some really good points. But hey it's hard for Barry to see how well the Blue's are playing with his head stuck up the Wings collective ass's

So, which Blues player will get suspended tonight for making contact with a Red Wing?
And which Wings player will hit someone in the head and receive no penalty?

This is a big game. Bigger than just another Blues-Wings game.
The Blues can end Detroit's 16 game home win streak. That's something that would get some national attention and bring more legitimacy to this Blues team...and it may also be a nice punch in the face to the Wings, letting them know that we are tired of being a door mat to you guys.

The streak ends tonight God damnit. :detsucks:

The National Weather Service has issued an excessive fellatio WARNING for Wayne County, Michigan. This includes the city of Detroit. Hockey teams wearing RED in the warned area will experience incessant fellating from some blowhards from the east, resulting in widespread collateral ignorance, inconsistent officiating, and the general douchebaggery of similarly clad people in the area. This WARNING is in effect for January 23 from 1830 to approximately 2130 local time, and temporarily replaces the WATCH currently in place since October 2011. Teams not wearing RED in the warned area should be aware that they will likely be bent over at some point in the evening, and are advised to watch their collective cornholes.

Dead Things - 4
Blues - 2

Too many BS calls against the Blues for actually touching a Dead Thing. Maybe even a suspension.

Hoping I am wrong.
