Jarome Iginla to the Bruins? Maybe the Pens...who knows.

The arms race in the Eastern Conference escalated Wednesday when the Boston Bruins acquired future Hall of Famer Jarome Iginla from the Calgary Flames for two prospects and a first-round pick.
The Bruins' move comes days after the Eastern Conference rival Pittsburgh Penguins added forward Brenden Morrow and defenseman Douglas Murray in separate deals.

The Flames get back defenseman Matt Bartkowski, 24, who has 11 games of NHL experience, plus center Alexander Khokhlachev, 19, a second-round pick in 2011.

Jarome Iginla's 18-year tenure with the Calgary Flames has come to an end.
The team announced that it has dealt Iginla to the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for college prospects Kenneth Agostino and Ben Hanowski as well as Pittsburgh's first-round draft pick.

Gee, Pittsburgh must want to win the cup this year. It will be a shame when they don't.
How are they paying all of these people?

Signals a (frankly overdue) re-build in Calgary.
They'd been putting it off and putting it off, with very few prospects in the system and trying to get the guys getting older and older to play better and better and just hasn't panned out.
Nice return there for Iginla, three quality prospects added to the pipeline and a salary cap free up. Reminds me of Tkachuk when we took the trade to Atlanta to at least give the Blues a first round pick for his getting a chance to make a run at the cup.

I still can't figure out what was going on with the conflicting stories of which team he went to. As I was posting the "traded to Boston" story NHL Tonight started running a Flames press conference regarding his trade to the Pens.

News outlets today...they're more worried about being first than being correct.Portland Blues wrote:I still can't figure out what was going on with the conflicting stories of which team he went to. This pisses me off, I really wanted Iginla to finish in Calgary. Plus I don't like the Pens.

As much as I dislike the Pens, I really want to see Iginla get a Cup. From the stories I've read, he seems like a good dude. He's been a great Captain/face of the franchise for a long time, he's a respectful player, and he's a good old fashioned power forward.
All goodwill goes out the door if the Blues-Pens meet for the Cup.

Agreed. Ray Bourque-esque if you ask me. If a guy has put up through the ups and downs of your franchise, paid his dues, been there 10+ years (much less the face of the franchise and captain) and he's getting up there in age/opportunities to get a ring and your team won't do it for him...dmiles2186 wrote:As much as I dislike the Pens, I really want to see Iginla get a Cup. Heartfelt congratulations, good luck, and get the best return you can get for him. Tkachuk and Weight both did it for us and the fact they came back makes them endeared to me forever for that alone.

We were checking out TSN when recording the podcast last night and they basically said it was a done deal to Boston. Crazy.

From this article on NHL.com, it looks like Iginla was able to choose between Pittsburgh or Boston. The deal Chiarelli offered is essentially the same deal the Pens offered.

What will be great is watching the Pens get knocked out in the first round again.
