Road warriors or comeback kings?
When it comes to the St. Louis Blues and Winnipeg Jets in their first-round Western Conference playoff series, both monikers can apply.
The Blues hold a 3-2 series edge heading into Game 6 Saturday in St. Louis.
In most cases, that would make the Blues a prohibitive favorite, especially if they get a lead.
Not in this series.
The road team has won each of the first five games of the series thus far, the first time in 15 years that's happened and just the fourth time in NHL history. No best-of-seven series has ever had the visitors win each of the first six games.
Additionally, each game has featured the winning team overcoming a deficit, only the 10th playoff series in which that has happened through five or more games.
The Blues won Game 5 by a 3-2 margin Thursday in Winnipeg, overcoming a two-goal deficit in the third period and getting the winner from Jaden Schwartz with 15 seconds remaining in regulation. Schwartz batted a no-look saucer pass from Tyler Bozak out of midair and into the net.
"We're just staying with it," Schwartz told NHL.com. "We believe in each other, we believe in the system, and we work as a team. When the team has success, we know that we all get rewarded. We're all playing the same, we're working hard, we're tight defensively, and the power play had a big goal to give us momentum.
"This whole series is so tight. You just never know right now with the bounces that are happening."
Jets goaltender Connor Hellebuyck had a different take on the winning goal.
"Lucky pinballs," Hellebuyck told NHL.com. "The puck just bounced and ended up right on their tape. Tough to eat that one, but I thought we were the better team. If we keep fighting here, it's not over."
Jets captain Blake Wheeler was philosophical heading into Game 6.
"No different than being down 0-2," Wheeler told NHL.com, referencing the hole the Jets were in before winning Games 3 and 4. "Happens all the time, man. Gotta win a hockey game. Won almost a hundred of them the last two years, so we're confident we can do that."
Added teammate Kevin Hayes to the Winnipeg Sun: "We've been down before and I'm sure the guys will come back and regroup. We've got to stay positive in this room. We've been down before in this series and we'll have a good game next game.
"If we lose, we're done. That's enough motivation. Game 6 will be our best game."
Blues goalie Jordan Binnington made 29 saves in Game 5, blanking the Jets after allowing two goals in the opening 13:35.
"That's important, right? My job is to give the team a chance to win. Obviously, (Winnipeg) got out to an early lead, and I kind of had to shut the door from there on out," Binnington told NHL.com. "It wasn't easy, and the boys really helped me out and battled. The penalty kill was outstanding, and it was a great team effort for pretty much 60 minutes."
Jets forward Nikolaj Ehlers left Game 5 in the final minute after blocking a shot from Blues defenseman Colton Parayko with his foot. Ehlers' status for Game 6 is uncertain, with the Sun reporting he will be a game-time decision.

Thanks for the bulletin board material, Hellebuyck. The better team is the team that wins, bottom line. Stop whining and stop the puck if you think your team is better.

Not like a puck deflected directly on to Lowry's stick on the Jets first goal or anything, Connor Hellebuyck. Funny that he doesn't mention the "lucky pinballs" which have gone the Jets way in this series.

Nice start, how about we don’t pull a Jets and actually hold on after scoring in the opening minute.

Schwartz knocks Schenn's shot's rebound in!!!! Blues score 23seconds in!!! Jets challenge for goaldtender interference. But Schwartz didn't contact Hellebuyck. Good Goal!!!

Serious question - is 91 playing tonight? Haven't heard his name mentioned once in the first 10 minutes on the NBC broadcast.

Very happy with the start and not just because of the early goal. Blues are throwing pucks in front when they don't have a clear shooting lane like they haven't been doing in prior games.

Well he clearly got held denying a scoring chance, but the only penalties in this series are high sticks or delay of games, unless your name is Perron.Portland Blues wrote:Serious question - is 91 playing tonight? Haven't heard his name mentioned once in the first 10 minutes on the NBC broadcast.

The Blues are flying!!! Good puck possession and forecheck lately, and also great plugging up of the neutral zone. Things are looking good. But it would be really nice if they could get the next goal, and go 2 up.

Fabbri will almost never have a better chance on a breakaway than on that one. Would have been sweet for the kid. Not a bad period against a desperate team.

Heck, Fabbri got 2 breakaways!!!Robb_K wrote:Fabbri will almost never have a better chance on a breakaway than on that one. Would have been sweet for the kid. Not a bad period against a desperate team.

The Blues played very well on that power play, getting lots of good chances. And now, they'll go on the power play again! The Jets' PKers should be tired now. Maybe The Blues can take advantage.
